There is a very Interesting thing going on that never makes it on the news. Remember back to history class and you might remember that all of Manhattan Island (New York City) was purchased for $24 in glass beads! You couldn’t buy all of Manhattan Island for $24 billion dollars today! It was a land grab like the world had never seen.
There is now a virtual land grab more aggressive than the 1600s. Domain names are extremely important and are in short supply. All domains cost about $10 when new. Put up a site, get a system of links pointing to that site and over time you can sell that domain for a decent amount of money.
Go to Godaddy.com, Nameboy.com or Domainsbot.com or any place you get web hosting and you can get a domain. Get creative. Using a keyword in your domain is very important. Are you selling pet toys? Pets.com is probably taken. Pettoys.com is probably already taken. Try ‘BestPetToys” or even “Best-Pet-Toys.com”. All are perfectly fine. People who say dashes in a domain name should be avoided don’t know what they are talking about.
You can rank any domain well in search engines. If you want to ‘buy’ trust, you can go look at some pet toy competitors and check the whois on them. Go to whois.net and check to see who owns the site. You can contact them and offer to buy their site. Don’t have enough cash? Go to pay 7 of the search results of pet toys and offer to buy one of those.
The reason to buy an old domain over a new one is because old domains have “trust” with search engines already. Because of what is called “spam sites” it takes a while for a search engine to trust you as a company. They want to see that you’re online for a long time before they rank you #1. Trust is called “PR” to Google. Download Firefox at mozilla.com/firefox and use it. Then go to the ‘tools area’ and download an extension called “SEOQuake” This will tell you all about PR on all sites you visit.
New domains have no PR until search engines trust it. Older domains can be a PR3, PR4, all the way up to PR9. You don’t be buying any PR 9 websites, and the only PR10 website is Google. Starting a web business with a PR3 or PR4 is very respectable and helpful in saving you time trying to build this favor with Google and others because someone already did. Thats step 1. Get a domain.
