What is DNS
OK, I’ll make this one brief. DNS is short for ‘domain name system’ or ‘domain name servers’. Clever right? Well to make it really easy, it acts as the Internet’s phonebook. Each domain has something called “name servers” which is a couple IP Addresses. For example. Pets.com is associated with 2 name servers, or numbers which is the IP address. When you click on pets.com, the computer looks up the name servers and finds the hosting that is associated with it, then pulls the information for pets.com from that server and shows it on your computer screen. Complicated? Not really, its just techno mumbo jumbo for how a website appears on your screen.
Why does any of this matter? Well if you buy hosting at Lunarpages.com like we already talked about at the SAME TIME as your domain name, then it doesn’t matter. If you bought a domain someplace, and then went to buy hosting somewhere else, you will have to change the domain name’s DNS in order for that domain to show the information on your server.
If you go to Lunarpages.com and buy it at the same time, they will set up the DNS for you and you don’t have to do anything. If you need to change your DNS and you don’t know how, each website is different. Go to your host and call customer service and ask them what you need to do. If you can’t reach customer service, if they do not return phone calls or emails, they are not a reputable company and you should ask for a refund immediately and use Lunarpages.com.
Bottom line, DNS is just 2 numbers that tells your computer where to go when you type in a web address. Just use Lunarpages.com and you don’t have to worry about this.
