The name Ottawa is a native word for "traders" as the Ottawa River was once a key transportation route for Canadian settlers and fur traders. Now the city is known for the quality of life, government and increasingly for its water sports and recreation. It extends northwestward all the way to Algonquin Park in Ontario. White water rafting and boat cruises are very popular attractions and even sailing takes place on the river. There is more available within the city of Ottawa. Across the river lies the city of Gatineau Quebec.
